What Is COR and Why Does It Matter?

Certificate of Recognition (COR) is a provincial certification that validates your Health and Safety Management System meets industry standards. It is jointly issued by Partnerships in Injury Reduction (PIR) and a certifying partner such as ACSA or Energy Safety Canada.

For many Alberta employers, COR is not optional - it is a contract requirement. General contractors, owners, and project managers increasingly require COR or SECOR as a condition of doing business. Beyond the contract value, a certified HSMS demonstrates to your workforce, your clients, and your regulators that your safety program is built to a verified standard.

To achieve COR, your HSMS must be reviewed through a formal audit. To pass, your overall score must reach 80% or greater with no single element scoring below 50%. ClearPath knows exactly where programs fall short because we audit them.

COR For Organizations with More Than 10 Employees

COR follows a three-year certification cycle. Each stage has specific audit requirements:

COR Certification - The initial external audit conducted by a certified consultant auditor. This is the audit that earns your certification. It includes a full documentation review, site observations, and worker interviews.

COR Maintenance - An internal audit conducted during each of the two interim years between certification and re-certification. Confirms your system remains active and compliant year over year.

COR Re-Certification - An external audit conducted by a certified consultant auditor in the third year of your cycle. Re-validates your HSMS and resets the certification cloc

SECOR For Organizations with 10 or Fewer Employees

SECOR is the small employer pathway to certification and carries the same credibility and contract value as COR. The SECOR evaluation focuses on documentation review rather than site observations and interviews, making it the right fit for smaller operations.

SECOR Certification - The initial evaluation reviewing both directive and operational documentation to establish your certification.

SECOR Maintenance - An evaluation of operational documentation conducted during each of the two interim years of your cycle.

SECOR Re-Certification -A full documentation evaluation in the third year reviewing both directive and operational documentation to re-certify your SECOR.

SECOR is available from your very first hire. If you have workers, you are eligible - and your competitors may already be certified.
